In previous weeks I talked about how my lack of confidence was affecting my language development massively. Today I’d like to explore more closely some of the reasons why this same thing happens to other people when they are learning a new language. Whether you’re learning English, Spanish, Italian, German, French, etc, we all reach that point sometimes where we feel like we’ve been stuck in the same place for too. Most of the time is probably our own fault, but sometimes it is difficult to see this. Does this sound familiar? If this is you, take a quick look at the following 5 reasons why you struggle with confidence when learning a foreign language

  1. You’re terrified of making mistakes
  2. You don’t feel like your conversations skills are good enough
  3. You worry people won’t understand what you’re saying
  4. You constantly compare yourself to other advanced speakers or natives
  5. You worry too much about your accent

Can you relate to any of the above? The good news is that it happens to almost all learners and it is perfectly normal when you’re learning a completely new language. So you’re not alone!
